Reading bedtime stories isn’t just a cherished bonding activity for parents and children; it also offers a surprising sleep benefit. A survey conducted by OnePoll for ThriftBooks found that this nightly ritual can improve sleep quality.

The survey involved 2,000 parents of school-age children (ages 5-18) and revealed that 63% of them read to their kids before bedtime, averaging four nights per week. These parents typically rotate among three types of books: fairy tales or adventure stories (38%), informational books (32%), and historical books (31%).

Interestingly, 81% of the surveyed parents noted that reading to their children not only helps them fall asleep but also aids the parents in drifting off. This aligns with other research indicating that reading before bed can enhance overall sleep health.

For example, a 2021 study compared the sleep quality of 991 participants, half of whom read before bed. Among those who completed the study, 42% of the readers reported improved sleep quality compared to 28% of non-readers.

Furthermore, a survey of parents of 62 Latino preschoolers found that bedtime reading was linked to longer total nighttime sleep. Among these parents, 48% reported consistent bedtime reading, while 42% reported frequent bedtime reading, illustrating the sleep benefits for even the youngest children.
