The body needs copper, an important trace mineral, in order to function properly. It contributes to the production of collagen, iron absorption, and immune system performance.
What Causes Copper Tarnishing
Being a reactive metal, copper over time reacts with ambient oxygen to generate a layer of copper oxide that is often black or brown in color and is responsible for copper’s tarnishing and loss of luster.
As a result of this organic process, copper may eventually acquire a protective layer known as a patina that may be colored aqua-green or blue.
Because it increases the value of copper craftsmanship and shields the copper from the elements, the patina, an indication of age, is highly coveted.
1) Oxygen Availability
One of the most important factors that affect copper tarnishing is the presence of oxygen. The ability to produce copper oxide is reduced over a longer period of time in the presence of dry air.
2) Moisture Content
The amount of moisture present encourages oxidation, which raises copper’s reactivity and causes corrosion and patina. That’s why it is advised to dry clean the copper product with a dry cloth rather than drying it up in the air.
3) Human interaction
One of the easiest ways for copper to tarnish is due to the oils found on our skin. Using copper objects is unavoidable(Jewelry, Utensils), so cleaning needs to be done more frequently.
4) Dead Skin Cells & Dust Particles
Dead skin cells consist of dust particles that may have some compounds that increase the rate of copper tarnishing.
5) Acidic Instability
Due to the reacting properties of copper, it has the ability to tarnish & corrodes when it comes in contact with acidic substances. Hence, it is preferred not to store milk, wine, or vinegar in copper utensils.
6) Chemical & Heat sensitive
Copper has a tendency to receptiveness to heat & some cleaning chemical substances which can tarnish the quality of copper. That’s why one must keep in mind to wash copper utensils using copper-safe cleaning methods instead of using chemical cleaners.
