The Kern High School District, the largest high school district in California for grades 9-12, serves over 42,000 students. To meet the diverse needs of its students, the district offers 19 regular high schools, five schools for students who need extra help, the Regional Occupational Center (ROC), Bakersfield Adult School, two career training centers (CTEC), the Kern Aquatic Complex, and several special education sites.

Classes started with 32 students in two rooms on the second floor of a building at Truxtun Avenue and L Street. The first graduation was two years later with three students. Today, over 200,000 students have graduated from KHSD.
