Growing waste mountains, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, carbon footprint, and non-biodegradable toxic e-waste are all constant threats to our environment. Our children are our future, and they must understand the value of following an environmentally friendly lifestyle.

On Earth Day, you can encourage them to take part in activities that teach them about ecological balance and make them aware of the dos and don’ts.

Environmental education is being taught in schools all over the world to help students understand how their decisions and actions affect the environment. Children are exposed to a wide range of activities, from planting saplings to recycling and energy conservation.

As parents, we must also contribute to making it far more effective.

The following Earth Day is not far away, and you can begin planning now. We have compiled a list of Earth Day activities for middle school students that they can incorporate into their daily routines.

    1) List recyclable household items

This may appear to be a simple task, but once they begin working on it, the process will improve their knowledge. They will learn a lot through this simple yet effective activity, from understanding the meaning of recycling and its impact on our environment to identifying recyclable objects.

    2) Recycling science projects

Uncover their inner scientists and spark their creativity with a recycled materials science project challenge! Give them the opportunity to explore, experiment, and invent using everyday items from around the house.

From designing a solar-powered car made from cardboard boxes to creating a mini greenhouse using plastic bottles, the possibilities are endless. Not only will this activity foster their creativity but it will also tell them about the importance of recycling and preserving our planet’s resources.

    3) Recycling art and craft projects

Transform the mundane into the magnificent with eco-friendly art and craft projects. From eggshell mosaics to paper-mache masterpieces, the sky’s the limit when it comes to crafting with recycled materials. They can grab eggshells, bottle caps, and old newspapers and create something truly unique and one-of-a-kind.

Not only will they be tapping into their creativity and imagination, but who knows, they might just surprise you with their brilliance and come up with something that is not only beautiful but also useful.

    4) Plastic-themed video project

The task is simple yet powerful – document the various plastic items that the students use in their daily lives at school. From the pencils they write with to the water bottles they drink from, students will be surprised at just how many plastic items they come across daily.

The project will not only teach them the importance of reducing their use of plastic, but it will also provide them with valuable skills in video production. They will learn how to plan and organize their footage, use different camera angles and techniques, and edit and present their final product.

The older kids can give it a creative touch with music, voiceovers, or animation. This project is not just about making a video, it’s about empowering them to use their creativity and technology to make a positive impact on their community and the environment.

    5) A pictorial essay on marine pollution

This journey beneath the sea to learn about marine pollution will be both entertaining and educational. It will not only take them to the ocean’s depths but also teach them about the dangers of pollution and its impact on marine life.

They will learn about the various sources of marine pollution, such as plastic waste and oil spills, as well as the negative effects it has on the ocean and its inhabitants.

You can also request that they make their underwater scenes out of recycled materials if you so desire. The possibilities are endless, from creating a plastic island out of bottle caps to creating an oil-covered seascape out of old newspapers.

This activity will help them develop their creativity and problem-solving skills while also teaching them about an important environmental issue. It’s an excellent way for them to protect the ocean now and in the future.

    6) List kitchen wastes that can be turned into fertilizers

Using eggshells, fish and chicken bones, onion and potato peels, and vegetable and fruit scraps as fertilizers can be a rewarding and long-lasting activity for children. It will not only teach them about the importance of environmental protection and waste reduction, but it will also provide them with valuable knowledge and skills that they can use throughout their lives.

As they get older, they’ll be able to turn what they would otherwise consider waste into valuable resources that can improve the health and growth of their plants.

No need to stress about the result; the true beauty lies in the journey. As your children create and explore with recycled materials, they’ll develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for the environment. And the best part?

These activities require little effort and can easily become a daily routine. Imagine the pride and satisfaction your child will feel as they turn trash into treasure and establish a lifelong habit of sustainability.
