Subtraction

Subtraction is a basic mathematical operation used to find the difference between two numbers. It is represented by the minus sign (-) and helps us know how much is left when we take away some items or quantities.

Here’s a small story of two friends, Lily and Max, to understand what subtraction is all about.

Lily and Max were playing with a basket of shiny marbles. Lily had 8 marbles, and Max had 5 marbles. They wanted to find out how many more marbles Lily had than Max, so they decided to use subtraction.

LEARN MORE ABOUT Subtraction

Lily started with 8 marbles. To find out how many more marbles she had than Max, they used subtraction. They imagined they were giving Max’s 5 marbles back to him one by one, counting as they went.

So, Lily had 8 marbles: 8 – 1 = 7, 7 – 1 = 6, 6 – 1 = 5. After giving back three marbles, she had 5 marbles left.

In this story, subtraction helped Lily and Max know the difference in the number of marbles they had. The minus sign (-) showed that they were taking away some marbles to find the difference.

Just like Lily and Max played with marbles to find the difference, we use subtraction to know how many more or fewer items we have when we take some away. It’s a fantastic math skill to learn when we want to figure out what’s left or how much we have after sharing with friends or taking away things.
