Place Value

Place value is a fundamental concept in mathematics. It is how we represent each digit’s value in a number, depending on its position. Place value is essential for understanding and performing mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. We have created a Math Quiz for grade 3 on Place Value.

Before moving to the Math Quiz for grade 3, let’s review some basic place value concepts:

  • Hundreds place: The hundreds place is the second digit from the right. It tells us how many hundreds are in the number. For example, in the number 456, the digit 5 is in the hundreds place, meaning there are 5 hundreds in the number.
  • Tens place: The tens place is the first digit from the right. It tells us how many tens are in the number. For example, in the number 456, the digit 6 is in the tens place, meaning there are 6 tens in the number.
  • Ones place: The ones place is the digit on the far right. It tells us how many ones are in the number. For example, in the number 456, the digit 4 is in the ones place, meaning there are 4 ones in the number.

Here is an example of a place value chart representing till crore:

| Place value | Crores | Lakhs | Ten thousands | Thousands | Hundreds | Tens | Ones | |—|—|—|—|—|—|—|

| Crores | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |

| Lakhs | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |

| Ten thousands | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |

| Thousands | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 |

| Hundreds | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 |

| Tens | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 |

| Ones | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 |

We have curated 10 questions for Math Quiz for Grade 3. They are easy but help in understanding the Place Value. So, let’s get started:

LEARN MORE ABOUT Place Value

Place value is the value of a digit in a number according to its position—the place value of a digit increases from right to left. For example, in the number 123, the 1 is in the hundreds place, the 2 is in the tens place, and the 3 is in the ones place. The place value of the 1 is 100, the place value of the 2 is 20, and the place value of the 3 is 3.

Place value of decimals

The place value of digits in decimals is similar to that of whole numbers, but the place values decrease by a factor of ten to the right of the decimal point. For example, in the number 12.34, 2 is in the tenths place, the 3 is in the hundredths place, and the 4 is in the thousandths place.

Place value and compare numbers

Place value can be used to compare numbers. For example, the number 123 is greater than the number 12 because the 1 in the hundreds place of 123 has a higher place value than the 1 in the ones place of 12.

Place value and operations

Place value is also used in arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
