Perimeter

Perimeter is the distance around the outside of a shape. It is the sum of all the sides of the shape.

Here’s a fun story about two friends named Jack and Emma to help you understand what perimeter is all about.

Jack and Emma were playing in their backyard when they noticed a beautiful garden filled with colorful flowers next door. The garden was surrounded by a fence to protect the flowers.

They were curious about how long the fence was, so they decided to find out the perimeter of the garden.

LEARN MORE ABOUT Perimeter

Jack and Emma took small steps along the fence, counting as they went. They walked along the front side, the back side, and the two sides. They found that the front side was 5 steps long, the back side was 3 steps long, and each side was 4 steps long.

To find the perimeter, they added all the sides together: 5 + 3 + 4 + 4 = 16 steps. So, the perimeter of the garden was 16 steps. That’s how the perimeter helped Jack and Emma know the total distance around the garden.

Simply put, Perimeter is the measurement of the total distance around the boundary or outer edge of a two-dimensional shape, such as a polygon or a closed figure. It is calculated by adding the lengths of all the sides of the shape.
