Fraction

Fractions are a way to represent numbers that show a part of a whole. They consist of two numbers separated by a line – the top number is called the numerator, and the bottom number is called the denominator. The numerator tells us how many parts we have, and the denominator tells us how many equal parts make up the whole.

Here’s a fun story to understand what fractions are all about.

Lily and Max were having a yummy pizza for lunch. The pizza was divided into 8 equal slices. Each slice was like a little triangle of deliciousness.

Lily was very hungry and wanted to know how many slices she could have. She counted the slices she had, and there were 3 of them. So, Lily’s slices were 3 out of the 8 equal slices.

LEARN MORE ABOUT Fraction

To show this, Lily used a fraction. She wrote it like this: 3/8. The number 3 on top (numerator) told her how many slices she had, and the number 8 at the bottom (denominator) told her that the whole pizza was divided into 8 equal slices.

Max, on the other hand, wasn’t as hungry as Lily. He only wanted 1 slice. So, Max’s slices were 1 out of the 8 equal slices.

Max also used a fraction. He wrote it like this: 1/8. The number 1 on top (numerator) told him how many slices he had, and the number 8 at the bottom (denominator) told him that the whole pizza was divided into 8 equal slices. That’s how fractions helped Lily and Max show the parts of the pizza they had.

Similarly, we use fractions to talk about parts of a whole, like pieces of pizza, slices of cake, or even time in a day. They are essential in measurements, such as telling time, measuring ingredients, and calculating distances on maps.
