Condition of Tangency for a Parabola: Formula and Derivation

    |

Understanding Tangents and Parabolas for the SAT

SAT preparation can often feel like trying to solve a puzzle where the pieces keep changing shape. But now and then, you come across a mathematical concept that is so elegant it almost feels like art. One of those concepts is the relationship between a line ( y = mx + c ) and a parabola when they are tangent to each other.

    The Parabola:

    What Does “Tangent” Actually Mean?

When we say a line is tangent to a curve, we mean they touch at exactly one point. Think of it like a high-five between a straight line and a curve; they meet, they touch, but they don’t cross over each other.

On your exam, you might see a linear equation like y = mx + c and a quadratic equation (a parabola). If the problem states the line is tangent to the parabola, it is giving you a massive hint: there is only one solution to the system of equations.

    The Formula for Tangency

For a line y=mx+c to be tangent to a parabola (for example y = ax² ), the discriminant of the resulting quadratic equation must equal zero.

     The common specific formula used for a parabola y² = 4ax  and a line y = mx + c, is: \(\displaystyle c = \frac{a}{m}\)

    The Derivation (Step-by-Step)

To find the condition where a line and a parabola touch at exactly one point, follow these logical steps:

    1. Create a System of Equations: Start with the equation of the parabola and the line.
    • Parabola: y = ax² +bx + k
    • Line:
    2. Set Them Equal to Each Other: Since they meet at the point of tangency, their -values are equal at that point: ax² + bx + k = mx + c

    3. Rearrange into Standard Quadratic Form (Ax²+Bx+C=0): Move all terms to one side to set the equation to zero: ax² + (b−m)x + (k−c) = 0

    4. Apply the “Simple Rule” (The Discriminant): As mentioned in the sources, a “simple rule” helps solve these problems. For a line to be tangent, there must be exactly one solution (one point of intersection). In algebra, a quadratic equation has exactly one solution if its discriminant () is zero.
    • The formula for the discriminant is D = B² − 4AC.
    • In our rearranged equation: ,  and .

    5. Set the Discriminant to Zero: (b−m)² − 4(a)(k−c) = 0

Why This Matters for Your Score

We have always been told that “a simple rule will help solve problems like these.” For SAT  students, that “simple rule” often involves the discriminant. When you set the line equation equal to the parabola equation, you create a new quadratic. Because they are tangent (touching at one point), the discriminant of that new quadratic must be zero.

It’s easy to get lost in the symbols (m, x, c), but try to remember that math is just a language used to describe the world. These properties aren’t just random rules—they are consistent truths.

Here are a few tips to keep you interested and focused during your study sessions:
    • Visualize the Graph: Don’t just look at the numbers. Imagine the parabola opening up and the line sliding perfectly against its side.
    • Keep it Simple: Focus on the “simple rules” that apply to multiple problems.

By mastering concepts like tangency, you aren’t just learning for a test—you’re training your brain to see the patterns in the world around you

FAQs on Tangency of a Parabola

    1. What does it mean for a line to be tangent to a parabola?

Ans. When a linear equation (y=mx+c) is tangent to a parabola, it means the line and the curve touch at exactly one point. On the SAT, identifying this "perfect touch" is crucial because it indicates there is only one solution to the system of equations.

    2. Does this help with the ACT as well as the SAT?

Ans. Yes.The sources highlight that these "simple rules" apply to various standardized tests, including specific help for ACT Math Matrix questions and the Law of Sines. Learning these core properties allows you to solve complex problems across different exam formats more efficiently.
