Historical Evolution: From Agricultural School to Research Powerhouse

    Historical Evolution

UConn’s origins trace back to 1881, when it was founded as the Storrs Agricultural School, named after brothers Charles and Augustus Storrs, who generously donated the land and initial funding to establish the school. Originally focused on agricultural education, the institution evolved over time to meet the educational demands of the state and the nation.

In 1893, the school became Connecticut’s designated public land-grant college, which allowed it to receive federal funding to support its agricultural programs. By 1939, the school had grown significantly and was renamed the University of Connecticut, marking a pivotal moment in its history.
