Vedic mathematics is an ancient knowledge of mathematics that provides a wide range of efficient methods for solving challenging problems. The Vyastisamastih sutra is one of these methods; the eleventh sutra is titled Specific and General. It explains using the average or exact middle binomial to convert a biquadratic equation into a simple quadratic equation using the quick method of mutual cancellations of odd powers.
Put another way; it applies a particular or average value to address our issues. In the Vyastisamastih sutra, we use the average number because it shows that the average is a specific value representing a range of values.
Below is an explanation of the simple application of this sutra to multiplication.
Example 1
58 x 62 = 3,596
From the above question, we find that 60 can be chosen as an average value for 62 and 58. And 62 is 4 numbers higher than 58, and for 62, it is 4 less than the number 58. Halving the difference, it is 4/2 = 2
So,
- Step 1: Square the average value (here it is 60): 60 x 60 = 3600
- Step 2: Square the halved difference (here it is 2): 2 x 2 = 4 (i.e., 62 – 58 = 4)
- Step 3: Subtracting the above results got from Step 1 and Step 2, we get
- 3600 – 4 = 3,596
Therefore , 58 x 62 = 3,596
Example 2
25 x 31 = 775
From the above question, 28 can be chosen as an average value for 31 and 25. And 31 is 6 numbers higher than 25; for 31, it is 6 less than 25. Halving the difference, it is 6/2 = 3
So,
- Step 1: Square the average value (here it is 28): 28 x 28= 784
- Step 2: Square the halved difference (here it is 3): 3 x 3 = 9 (i.e., 31 – 25 = 6)
- Step 3: Subtracting the above results got from Step 1 and Step 2, we get
- 784 – 9 = 775
Therefore , 25 x 31 = 775
Benefits of learning this sutra
There are several advantages to using the Vyastisamastih Sutra while computing multiples:
1. Efficiency and Speed
The Vyastisamastih Sutra eliminates the need for lengthy conventional multiplication techniques, enabling quicker mental calculations and lowering the likelihood of mistakes.
2. Versatility
The method may be used with two-digit and multi-digit numbers, making it a valuable tool for mathematicians of all skill levels.
3. Scalability
The Vyastisamastih Sutra gains in worth as the numbers increase. It makes multiplying easier and makes managing complicated calculations easier.
4. Value for Education
Mastering Vedic Mathematics, especially the Vyastisamastih Sutra, helps kids improve their aptitude for mathematics and mental agility, as well as enhance their problem-solving capabilities.
