    How to Find Volume of a Cube?

    |

    📦 LET'S EXPLORE VOLUME

    Imagine you have a perfectly cube-shaped box. How much space is inside it? That is exactly what volume tells you.

    The good news is that finding the volume of a cube is one of the simplest volume calculations because every edge of a cube has the same length.

    Volume of a Cube Formula

    V = s³

    Here:

    - V = volume

    - s = length of one side (or edge)

    In other words:
    Volume = side × side × side

    So, if one side of a cube measures 4 cm:

    V = 4 × 4 × 4 = 64 cm³

    The volume is 64 cubic centimeters.

    How to Find the Volume of a Cube

    You only need three steps:

    01

    Step 1: Find the side length

    Look at the length of any one edge of the cube. You only need one measurement because all of its edges are equal.

    02

    Step 2: Cube the side length

    Multiply the side by itself three times.

    V = s × s × s
    03

    Step 3: Write the answer in cubic units

    If the side is measured in centimeters, the volume is in cm³. If it is measured in meters, the volume is in .

    ⭐ Example

    A cube has a side length of 6 inches. What is its volume?

    Use the formula:
    V = s³
    Substitute 6:
    V = 6³
    Multiply:
    V = 6 × 6 × 6 = 216
    So, the volume is 216 in³.

    Why Do We Cube the Side?

    Here's the idea behind the formula.

    The volume of a rectangular prism is:

    length × width × height

    A cube is a special rectangular prism where all three measurements are equal.

    So if each measurement is s:

    V = s × s × s = s³

    You can also imagine filling the cube with tiny 1-unit cubes. The volume tells you how many of those unit cubes would fit inside.

    That's why volume is measured in cubic units.

    ⚠️ A Common Mistake: 3s Is Not s³

    This is an easy mistake to make.

    3s

    means:
    s + s + s

    means:
    s × s × s

    For example, if s = 4:

    3s = 12
    s³ = 4 × 4 × 4 = 64

    So remember: volume uses multiplication, not simply multiplying the side by 3.

    What If the Side Is a Decimal?

    The same formula works.

    Suppose a cube has a side length of 2.5 cm.

    V = 2.5³
    V = 2.5 × 2.5 × 2.5 = 15.625
    So the volume is 15.625 cm³.

    The formula does not change just because the side length is a decimal.

    Cube vs. Rectangular Prism

    A quick comparison of the two volume formulas

    Shape Volume Formula
    Cube
    Rectangular prism l × w × h
    The difference is that a cube has three equal dimensions, so one side length is enough.
    🧠 QUICK CHALLENGE

    Quick Challenge

    A cube has a side length of 5 cm.

    What is its volume?

    Answer: 125 cm³, because 5 × 5 × 5 = 125.
    💡

    Quick rule to remember

    If all three dimensions are the same, cube the side: V = s³.

    So whenever you see a cube and know the length of one edge, you already have everything you need to find its volume.
