    What is Mathematics in Nature?

    |

Have you seen the spiral of a seashell, the design of a snowflake, and the composition of a sunflower? This is among some of the cases where mathematics plays out in nature. This means that mathematics does not only take place in the classroom but also in nature through living things like plants and animals as well as other phenomena in nature.

    What is Mathematics in Nature?

Mathematics in nature is the branch of mathematics that studies numbers, designs, patterns, and shapes simply occurring in nature. Since nature has a habit of creating patterns and shapes which can be explained mathematically, even aspects such as symmetry, geometry, and evolution.

    Examples of Mathematics in Nature

There are numerous examples of mathematics in nature.

    1. Sunflowers and Fibonacci Spirals

There are spirals formed by the seeds of a sunflower. The spirals that have been created sometimes coincide with numbers belonging to the Fibonacci sequence such as 13, 21, 34, and 55.

    2. Butterflies and Symmetrical Wings

A butterfly can be taken as an illustration of symmetry. The wings function similarly resulting in symmetry.

    3. Seashells and Spiral Formations

A seashell resembles a spiral object. Spirals can be observed in a pine cone, hurricane, and plant.

    4. Honeycombs and Hexagonal Structure

Bees form honeycombs in a six-sided figure called the hexagon. This helps to remain together appropriately and save space.

    5. Trees and Repetitions

If you look at the branches of a tree, you would realize that they repeatedly split into smaller branches. The same patterns can be observed on the leaves of trees and fern plants.

    Nature Pattern in Mathematics

Nature pattern in mathematics refers to the recurrence of a pattern or structure that can be described using mathematical principles. Recognition of such patterns allows us to learn about the development of living things and systems in nature.

The Nature of Mathematics in the Modern World

This relationship is also practical for modern life. The nature of mathematics in the modern world is observable in science, technology, engineering, architecture, and computer science.

Scientists utilize mathematics to analyze weather, plants, animals, ecosystems, and many other natural systems. Engineers may also analyze natural structures to develop better designs.

Ways Children Can Experience Maths When They Are in Nature

Learning mathematics from nature is an exciting activity for kids since they would be able to:

    • – Count the number of petals of flowers.
    • – Try to find symmetry in the leaves.
    • – Try to find spirals.
    • – Identify different geometric shapes.
    • – Observe the branching of trees.

All these simple activities make children see mathematics everywhere.

    Conclusion

There are numerous mathematical patterns present in nature. Sunflower spirals, the symmetry of butterflies, hexagons of honeycombs, and tree branches teach us to observe the surrounding world from a different angle.

The more closely we look at nature, the more links between mathematics and the world become visible to us.
