How Many Days Are in February?

    |

February is the shortest month of the year, but it has one little calendar trick: its number of days can change.

    February at a glance
    28
    days in a common year
    29
    days in a leap year
The extra date is called Leap Day.

So, why does February get fewer days than every other month? And how can you tell whether a particular February will have an extra day?

How Many Days Are in February 2026?

If you’re looking specifically at February 2026, the answer is straightforward: it is a regular, or common, year rather than a leap year. The month therefore runs from February 1 through February 28.

There is no February 29 on the 2026 calendar.

But that leads to a more interesting question: why does February sometimes get a 29th day at all?

Why Does February Have 28 or 29 Days?

The reason begins with the fact that a calendar year and Earth’s trip around the Sun do not line up perfectly.

We usually count a year as 365 days. However, Earth takes approximately 365.25 days to complete one orbit around the Sun. That extra fraction of a day may seem tiny, but it accumulates over time.

Adding an extra day to the calendar periodically helps keep the calendar year aligned with Earth’s orbit.

That extra day is placed in February, creating February 29, which is why the year is called a leap year. NASA notes that the extra calendar day compensates for the portion of Earth’s orbital period that is not captured by a 365-day calendar.

How Do You Know If February Has 29 Days?

You can use the Gregorian calendar’s leap-year rule.

    Example
    2026
    Not divisible by 4
    Common year
    Century example
    1900
    Divisible by 100, not 400
    Common year
    Century exception
    2000
    Divisible by 400
    Leap year

The quick shortcut is to check whether the year is divisible by 4. However, there is an important exception: a century year must also be divisible by 400 to qualify as a leap year.

That is why 2000 was a leap year, while 1900 was not. This distinction prevents the calendar from drifting too far away from the seasons over very long periods.

A Simple Way to Remember February

Here’s an easy memory trick: think of February as the “28-or-29” month.

Instead of trying to memorize a complicated list, remember the one unusual rule:

February normally stops at 28, but a leap year gives it one extra day.

That extra date is February 29, and it is known as Leap Day.

    The Bottom Line

February is unusual because its length changes depending on the year. The reason isn’t random: the calendar periodically adjusts for the small difference between a 365-day calendar year and Earth’s approximately 365.25-day orbit.

For 2026, there is no leap day. For a leap year such as 2028, February gains one extra date.

So the next time February seems unusually short, you’ll know exactly why.
