Imagine splitting something into 6 equal parts and taking just 1 part. That is exactly what 1/6 means. But when you write that same amount as a decimal, the digits do something interesting.
How Do You Convert 1/6 to a Decimal?
A fraction can be rewritten as division: 1/6 = 1 ÷ 6
Since 1 is smaller than 6, the answer starts with 0. Add a decimal point and continue the division:
So the decimal becomes:
1 ÷ 6 = 0.166666…
The remainder keeps returning to 4, which is why the digit 6 keeps repeating.
Why Does 1/6 Have a Repeating Decimal?
Some fractions produce decimals that eventually stop. For example, 1/2 becomes 0.5.
But 1/6 does not divide evenly into a power of 10. During long division, the remainder keeps returning, so the same decimal digit appears again and again.
That makes 1/6 a non-terminating repeating decimal.
In general, when a fraction in simplest form has a denominator containing a prime factor other than 2 or 5, its decimal representation repeats rather than terminating.
1/6 as a Decimal: Exact vs. Rounded
It is important not to confuse the exact decimal with a rounded answer.
| Form | Value |
|---|---|
| Exact decimal | 0.166666… |
| Nearest tenth | 0.2 |
| Nearest hundredth | 0.17 |
| Nearest thousandth | 0.167 |
| Approximate percentage | 16.67% |
So if a question asks for the exact decimal, use 0.166666…. If it asks you to round to the nearest thousandth, the answer is 0.167.
What Are 6 1/4, 6 1/2, and 6 1/8 as Decimals?
These are mixed numbers, so first convert the fractional part and then add the whole number.
| Mixed number | Decimal |
|---|---|
| 6 1/4 | 6.25 |
| 6 1/2 | 6.5 |
| 6 1/6 | 6.166666… |
| 6 1/8 | 6.125 |
For example:
6 1/2 = 6 + 1/2 = 6 + 0.5 = 6.5
If you see a search such as “what is 1 6 as a decimal?”, it may simply be another way of typing 1/6 as a decimal. The answer is still 0.166666…
Quick Check
You can check a fraction-to-decimal conversion by multiplying the decimal back by the denominator.
For 1/6:
0.166666… × 6 = 1
So the decimal represents the same value as the original fraction.
