Imagine you have a perfectly cube-shaped box. How much space is inside it? That is exactly what volume tells you.
The good news is that finding the volume of a cube is one of the simplest volume calculations because every edge of a cube has the same length.
Volume of a Cube Formula
Here:
- V = volume
- s = length of one side (or edge)
Volume = side × side × side
So, if one side of a cube measures 4 cm:
The volume is 64 cubic centimeters.
How to Find the Volume of a Cube
You only need three steps:
Step 1: Find the side length
Look at the length of any one edge of the cube. You only need one measurement because all of its edges are equal.
Step 2: Cube the side length
Multiply the side by itself three times.
Step 3: Write the answer in cubic units
If the side is measured in centimeters, the volume is in cm³. If it is measured in meters, the volume is in m³.
A cube has a side length of 6 inches. What is its volume?
V = s³
V = 6³
V = 6 × 6 × 6 = 216
Why Do We Cube the Side?
Here's the idea behind the formula.
length × width × height
A cube is a special rectangular prism where all three measurements are equal.
V = s × s × s = s³
You can also imagine filling the cube with tiny 1-unit cubes. The volume tells you how many of those unit cubes would fit inside.
⚠️ A Common Mistake: 3s Is Not s³
This is an easy mistake to make.
means:
s + s + s
means:
s × s × s
For example, if s = 4:
So remember: volume uses multiplication, not simply multiplying the side by 3.
What If the Side Is a Decimal?
The same formula works.
Suppose a cube has a side length of 2.5 cm.
The formula does not change just because the side length is a decimal.
Cube vs. Rectangular Prism
A quick comparison of the two volume formulas
| Shape | Volume Formula |
|---|---|
| Cube | s³ |
| Rectangular prism | l × w × h |
Quick Challenge
A cube has a side length of 5 cm.
What is its volume?
Quick rule to remember
So whenever you see a cube and know the length of one edge, you already have everything you need to find its volume.
