Choosing the Right Career: How Parents Can Help

    |

Today we will discuss the significance of choosing the right career path and how you may assist your children in making the proper career decision.

Are you working in a field of your choice?

Or are you living your parents’ fantasies?

Or did you give in to peer pressure and take your current job?

If you follow your passion, you are fortunate; otherwise, you may encounter health issues. The researchers at Ohio State University are saying this.

Work dissatisfaction in your 20s and 30s might severely influence your mental health in your 40s and beyond. This research is being conducted for a cause. Many got into the wrong profession for various reasons.

99% of people choose the wrong career path.

47% of millennials in the age bracket of 33-40 years wish they had chosen a different career path, reports a 2021 study by The Harris Poll.

What Do Parents Think They Need Help With

The question is, why do people select the wrong profession?

There are several reasons why people choose the incorrect career.

The most important is a lack of knowledge. According to a poll, 93 percent of professionals were aware of fewer than 10 employment alternatives as students. They mostly knew about engineering, medicine, media, law, finance, and information technology. It is a sad state of affairs because there are several options available.

Reportedly, there are over 600 different job paths to choose from. As a result, students’ understanding of all potential job alternatives should be improved.

Another reason is parents. They impose their dreams or decisions on their children. The Joblist surveyed the extent of parental influence on education and career choices for currently employed Gen-X, Millennial, and Gen-Z individuals.

65% of people now work in the field their parents desired. The survey also revealed that career discussions often start late because parents keep this topic for later.

Only 24% of respondents discussed careers with their parents between the ages of 6 to 9.

Around 35% had these conversations between the ages of 10 and 15, and the same percentage had them when they were 16 or older. We must understand that the choices we make about our careers can impact our lives for 30 to 40 years.

So, it is crucial to consider these choices carefully. Parents play a significant role in this process, and their influence can be positive and negative.

The question is, how can we make this influence a positive one?

The first step is to understand our child’s interests and strengths truly. We should actively help them explore what they enjoy doing the most. Some kids are good at math, others are great artists, and some have a talent for sports, and so on.

Parents must pay attention to their interests, skills, and passion. This will help in guiding them towards a fulfilling career. One helpful tool to aid in this process is Psychometric Tests. These tests provide a scientific and standardized way to measure a person’s mental capabilities and behavioral style.

It can help us comprehensively understand our child’s interests, personality, and aptitude. Based on the results, you can help them explore the options and help them in their field of study. We must also stay informed about the changes in the education system and the demand for futuristic skills

It’s crucial to be aware of how the educational landscape is evolving. The job market and industries are constantly changing, and the skills that will be in demand in the future may differ from what they are today.

To guide our children effectively, we must proactively understand the skills and knowledge that will be valuable in tomorrow’s world.

By keeping track of these trends, we can ensure that our advice and choices for their education and career paths are well-informed and relevant. We would love to hear about your approach to guiding your children. Did you prioritize following their passions and abilities to lead them toward a bright and fulfilling future? Please share your insights with us.

Absolutely! It’s common for kids to explore different interests. This is a great time for them to learn about various careers through books, online resources, or even job shadowing.
