What Every Arizona Parent Should Know About the ESA Program

    |

If you’re homeschooling in Arizona, or thinking about it, the state literally wants to pay you to do it. Welcome to the Arizona Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA), where your tax dollars actually come back to you.

    What Is the Arizona ESA?

The ESA is Arizona’s universal school choice program. Instead of sending state education dollars to a school building, the money follows your child for private schooling, homeschooling, tutoring, or online classes. As of September 2025, over 92,000 Arizona students are enrolled. It’s projected to reach 102,800 by June 2026.

Every account receives 90% of what the state would’ve spent on that student in public school. This amounts to approximately $6,500-$7,000 for most K-12 students and about $4,000-$5,000 for kindergarteners. The amount is much more for students with disabilities.

    How It Works

Parents sign a contract agreeing to teach reading, grammar, math, social studies, and science. Then they use their ESA funds through ClassWallet to purchase approved educational expenses: curriculum, tutoring, co-op tuition, computers, even field trips with proper documentation. Funds are distributed quarterly, roll over year to year, and aren’t taxable income.

    Why Do Parents Consider It?

    Category Details
Real Results ESA enrollment has grown from 12,000+ students in 2022 to more than 97,000 in 2025. This is a 700% increase in three years. Families are clearly finding value in this program.
Maximum Flexibility You can allocate funds across multiple vendors and services simultaneously. With quarterly disbursements and unlimited rollover, families have spent an average of 85% of their annual allocation while saving the rest for future needs.
Diverse Spending Patterns Recent data shows families use ESA funds for private school tuition (45%), homeschool curriculum and materials (35%), tutoring services (12%), and specialized therapies (8%). You're not limited to one approach.
Long-term Savings Because unused funds roll over indefinitely, some families are strategically saving for expensive items like college prep courses, AP exams, or even dual enrollment tuition in later years.

Plus, homeschool parents have been paying Arizona taxes for years- this is your chance to get some back.
