The excitement of ESA approval can quickly turn to anxiety when you’re waiting for funds to arrive. You’re ready to invest in tutoring, curriculum, therapies, and educational materials—but when will the money actually be available? Here’s a clear breakdown of Arizona’s quarterly disbursement schedule so you can plan with confidence.
Understanding the Quarterly Calendar
Arizona ESA distributes funds in four quarterly installments aligned with the school year. Your payment schedule begins in the quarter when you sign your contract.
- Q1 (July 1–September 30): The back-to-school quarter, ideal for securing full-year educational coverage
- Q2 (October 1–December 31): Fall quarter for mid-semester adjustments
- Q3 (January 1–March 31): Winter quarter for mid-year needs—we’re currently in this period as of January 2026
- Q4 (April 1–June 30): Spring quarter, useful for summer program planning
Timeline expectations: New accounts typically require 3 weeks after contract signing for ClassWallet setup and initial deposit. For existing accounts, disbursement requests are processed mid-to-late in the month (between the 15th and 30th), with funds appearing 5–7 business days later. Keep in mind that delays can occur during high-enrollment periods—for example, Q2 2024 disbursements didn’t arrive until October 30 for some families.
From Application to Access: The Complete Process
- Apply online at azed.gov/esa anytime throughout the year. Processing takes up to 30 days, with approval notifications sent via email (check your spam folder).
- Sign your contract digitally once approved. Important: Withdraw from any public or charter school immediately to avoid dual-funding issues.
- Access ClassWallet through the ESA portal. This platform offers a marketplace of approved vendors, direct payment options, reimbursement requests, and debit cards for eligible purchases.
- Spend on approved expenses: Funds cover tuition, curriculum, therapies, tutoring, and more. Awards typically equal 90% of the per-pupil state funding—approximately $7,000–$9,000 annually for students without disabilities, and up to $28,000 or more for students with qualifying disabilities such as autism.
- Report quarterly: Even if you don’t use funds in a given quarter, you must submit a zero-expenditure attestation. Unused funds roll over to subsequent quarters.
Maintaining good standing: Submit all required documentation on time, ensure purchases comply with program guidelines, and avoid unapproved expenses. Violations can result in payment holds or account suspension.

Strategies to Avoid Payment Delays
Many families experience delays ranging from days to weeks. Here are evidence-based strategies to minimize wait times:
- Apply early in the year: Submitting before Q1 ensures you receive the full annual allocation (averaging around $7,500).
- Prepare documentation in advance: Have your child’s birth certificate, proof of Arizona residency (a utility bill is the primary document), and eligibility documentation ready (such as proof of 45 days of public school enrollment, where applicable).
- Check the portal daily: Stay on top of disbursement notifications and required actions.
- Contact support when needed: Reach the ESA helpdesk at 602-364-1969 (Monday–Friday, 8 AM–5 PM, with extended hours during peak periods).
- Plan for current quarter deadlines: For Q3, disbursement requests are typically processed between January 15–30, with funds expected in early February.
- Work with registered vendors: Ensure your service providers are registered in the ClassWallet system. All invoices must include the student’s name, service dates, and itemized totals.
With over 85,000 students enrolled in Q1 2025, program demand continues to grow, which can affect processing timelines. Building buffer time into your planning helps ensure uninterrupted access to educational services.
